Even Realities G0: A Bench Log of a Glass That Does Almost Nothing

BENCH LOG // Even Realities supported this piece and shipped me a G0, on the understanding that I would treat it like anything else that lands on the bench. So I did.

There is gloriously little to dig into, and that is the story. Released in September 2025 as a $250 small batch you had to personally request, the G0 puts the time and walking directions into your eyeline and stops there. No Teleprompt, no Even AI, no Translate, no Conversate. Under the loupe it is a restrained little optical engine and a battery, with the software ambition deliberately left in the box. What the datasheet does not spell out is why the price is where it is: the G0 only touches location data, the current time, and the date. No network calls to anything else. No remote services. That constraint is not incidental; it is the engineering reason the thing costs $250 instead of considerably more.

For identification purposes: the G0 has a tell. The weights at the end of each temple arm are half-trapezium shaped — a wedge, visibly narrower at the rear than at the hinge end. The G1 and G2 both use a flat rectangular block instead, a change that came in with later production tooling. If someone hands you a G0 without the box, that geometry gives it away before you read a single spec.

Two things I did not expect. First, the prototype handles the basics better than I assumed it would; time and directions are genuinely useful on a walk, and the display is legible without making you feel like you are wearing a heads-up display from a film set. Second, and this is worth flagging clearly: the lenses carry a persistent violet-purple shimmer that has nothing to do with whether the unit is on. It is a property of the display substrate, present at all times, and it does not vanish when you power down. In a meeting room or anywhere that calls for discretion, that permanent iridescence is conspicuous. I would not wear these to a job interview.

I respect a prototype that knows what it is testing. The G0 was testing whether the absolute basics earn a place on your face before any of the assistant cleverness shows up, and on my bench the answer was a quiet yes. It is gone now, sold out and not coming back, which is the correct ending for a science experiment. The grown-up version of the idea lives in the G2.
