Poking at Quest 3 Passthrough Until It Flinched

FIELD LOG // The Quest 3, out since 10 October 2023 from $499, leads with full-colour passthrough, and that is the part I actually care about, because passthrough is the bridge between a headset and the lighter glasses everyone keeps promising.

So I tried to break it. Low light: it gets grainy and the room smears. Fast hand motion close to the cameras: a little warping at the edges. Reading my own phone through it: legible, just, but I would not want to answer email that way for an hour.

What it proves, though, is the direction. The headset can put digital things into a real room convincingly enough that your brain mostly stops arguing. Shrink that down, lose the ski-goggle bulk, and you are circling the same idea the glasses people are chasing from the other side. Two roads, one destination, and the Quest is further along the hard road than people give it credit for.
